It is no coincidence that an American general has “met” with Boric on two occasions to talk to him about lithium, nor that several Chilean ministers of the current administration have enthusiastically reaffirmed that Mercosur is “our fourth trading partner after China, the United States and the European Union”. And if Chile has not yet earned its membership in Mercosur (although it has been an “associated country” since 1996), Boric is requesting its entry, something for which it must make merits especially in the logistic role of Chile -as proposed by IIRSA- which needs to “restructure” the territories giving way to megaprojects that facilitate the “bioceanic corridor” that connects the ports of the Atlantic with those of the Pacific crossing the Andes Mountains and gaining control of the borders. To this end, they must expand the terminals of the port of Valparaíso and the “Central Port” of San Antonio, thus increasing their cargo transfer capacities.
The gain for international markets would be abundant, San Antonio would contribute two million TEUs to the 1,000 million TEUs that Valparaiso would increase. A TEU is the way in which the capacity of a container to efficiently and effectively transfer its cargo to other forms of transportation is measured, thus, thanks to the increase of TEUs of the ports of greater Valparaiso, never before seen gains will be achieved in the assembly of maritime and land markets… But in this vision and mission, the conglomerates of marginalized people and the obstacles imposed by nature in the midst of “restructuring” territories must be eradicated.
